About GICA

The Global Indonesia Care Association (GICA), a nonprofit organization based in Taichung, Taiwan, follows the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). GICA aims to build a self-media platform that promotes mutual communication and understanding, fostering cultural exchange between Taiwan and Indonesia, improving migrant workers' communication skills, language, and competencies, and preventing ethnic conflicts and inequality arising from cultural misunderstandings. The goal is to create a harmonious and inclusive society where diverse ethnic groups can thrive together.

Issues of Concern

In Taiwan, there have been long-standing stereotypes about the lifestyle, diet, clothing, and religion of foreign migrant workers, which sometimes lead to misunderstandings. This has occasionally resulted in migrant workers facing physical or emotional distress but being unable to express their concerns in Chinese, leading to labor disputes. Additionally, Indonesian migrant workers often have limited vacation time, making it difficult to participate in regular activities or ongoing courses. Those who wish to learn more and integrate into local Taiwanese life frequently face interruptions due to overtime or employer demands. For example, domestic workers in some households may go months or even a year without a break. However, due to cultural and language barriers, they struggle to express their difficulties, which can result in disputes and work-related issues, reflecting deeper problems in the lives of these workers.
